“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
Isn’t that typical of mankind—God shows His power and glory, and instead of responding in awe, people scoff.
In six days God spoke the world into existence.
“What a myth. Nature made itself…and multiply that time by a billion years.”
God sent the flood to destroy wicked man, preserving only righteous Noah and his family on the ark.
“Don’t be silly. The earth has continued on exactly as it has been since the beginning. There are no such things as worldwide catastrophes.”
God delivered Israel from the hand of the Egyptians through ten plagues.
“Miracles don’t exist.”
Israel crossed the Red Sea on dry land by the hand of the Lord.
“It wasn’t really the Red Sea, it was just a tributary trickle they crossed.”
Jesus Christ came to die for sinners and rose again to defeat death.
“Even if he did die on that cross, rising again is impossible.”
One day God will judge the earth in fire.
“Man’s progress just continues! If you’re going to worry about the end of the world, worry about your carbon footprint.”
Is it any wonder that God calls for faith to please Him? He must be so tired of people seeing or hearing of His mighty works, and instead giving Him the logical honor and reliance, they refuse to believe or acknowledge what He’s done. People think so much of their own wisdom, that if they can’t figure it out, it must not be so. They refuse to realize that the way God’s work reaches beyond the scope of their understanding demonstrates His greatness.
Can you think of any more examples of the Power of God being chalked up as foolishness by the ‘wisdom of man’?
