Just Four Kids

By Jerry

“Wow!” Gail exclaimed as she saw the camp site.  It was a big, mostly cleared out area, with a nice pond and a big tree shading it. There were two tents; one was gray/blue and the other was a pale yellow, both with black.

John and Ira were dropping off sticks next to the fire pit when-“Gail!” John yelled, Ira ran over and grabbed Gail’s hand, dragging her over to the fire pit.

“This is the coolest camp trip ever”

“I know, isn’t it!? I can’t believe mom and dad agreed to let me have a camping trip out here-and all night long too!” John exclaimed. “We just have to stay inside the fence or go inside”

“Gail pick up sticks with us, we’re collecting them for the camp fire later.” Ira yelled.

“We get to make an actual fire?!” Gail wondered out loud.

“No, but we can pretend.” , John answered ,“Come on, we just have to wait for Max to get here.”

The kids walked around collecting sticks for the fire. About 30 minutes later Max showed up; “Hi guys!” , Max said, “Sorry I’m late, mom wanted to stop at the store”.

“That’s fine“,  Gail consoled, “Come on, we were just about to go fishing in the pond”,

Gail walked over to the ‘pond’ ” “my mom gave us gold fish and we’re going to fish for them” John whispered, as Gail and Ira grabbed the goldfish and started to pour some of the box in the “pond”.

“Won’t your mom get mad that were putting goldfish in your poo-” Max started to say “Shhhhhh its a pond, and no, we’ll clean it all up” John interrupted.

They soon realized that goldfish were probably not the best idea, as they kept on getting too soggy and falling apart.

They were trying to clean it up when the park ranger came out with a tray of food “Mo- I mean its the park ranger!” Ira exclaimed they all walked up to see what she had brought.  It was fish, chicken and lemonade. John kinda shooed her away as they all thanked her for the food.

“Thank you mom but you can’t be out here, we have to hunt for the food.”

She laughed and returned to the “woods”. John took all the food then went back and knocked on the door of the “woods” asking for some more plates. The park ranger handed him some and then left.

“What are you doing!?” Ira asked John.

“I’m putting the food on plates so we can hide them and hunt for them like we’re in the woods”

“But I want my food now!”

“No you’re supposed to hunt for it”

“BUT I’M HUNGRY!”

“Here” Gail cut in handing a plate with some food on it to Ira.

“I already caught it for you.”

Thank you.” Ira said glaring at John.

John shrugged it off and the rest of the kids started to hide the food around the campgrounds, being careful not to get the food too dirty. After everything was well hidden the hunt began! They started by getting 3 big sticks to use as spears, then ended up turning into 4 after Ira decided that she wanted to hunt after all. Then after Ira located a stick she suddenly started wondering how much force it would take to break other peoples sticks with her stick, so they all pretened that she was a savage monkey attacking them. They then captured her and turned it all into a fun game of poke-the-monkey. After she broke her stick on Gail’s stick, she told Max that he had to give her his spear and to join forces. As always Max complied and gave her his stick, then he began acting like a monkey. Max and Ira soon broke Gail’s stick and she had to join them.

“Ok sounds fun!” she said excitedly, then started acting like a monkey as well.

Then they chased John into a corner and broke his stick in a dramatic battle to the death between Ira and John.

“GO IRA!!” Gail cheered

“Hey,“ John protested “what about me?!”

“Max you have to cheer for John, and I’ll cheer for them both!”

“Why does John get more cheers than me?!” Ira pouted.

“John needs the motivation so that he’s not sad when he loses!”

At this, John seemed insulted but he knew it was true. Sure enough; soon after, she whacked his stick out of his hands and broke it in two. She was triumphant(and now very happy)! After the battle was over, the sun began to go down so they decided to start the campfire.

They went over to the campfire and tuned it on so that they could see. Just when they were about to tear open the bag of marshmallows-it started raining.

“Ahhhggg!!!!!” Ira exclaimed feeling frustrated.

“Rain? I didn’t know that you had sprinklers!”, Gail said ,“That’s so cooooooool!”

“Nope, it’s rain!”  Ira corrected.

“Quick, to the tent!!” John commanded.

They all quickly ran to the tent, but as they got there Max realized they had forgotten to bring the flashlight. So, after he told the group, they pushed him out to go get the light from the campfire.

As Max made his way through the darkness over to the fire, something just out of vision caught his eye. He looked over and he saw something that looked kinda like a wolf or a dog. The wolf thing appeared behind him with another one was also chasing Max.

“Ahhhhhh! Wolf!! Open up the tent!!!” Max yelled, terrified. The kids opened the tent to let him in, but just as they opened the flap, one of the wolves circled in front of Max and he tripped. Max quickly got up and ran into the tent. Once he got there all the kids praised him for being so brave and running so fast to get away from those big wolves.

“Oh no! I think that you hurt your leg, sad.” Ira said.

“What? No it’s no-” Max said confused.

“Yes, I think it’s broken.” John agreed.

“I think we’re going to have to amputate it!” Gail said, a little too cheerfully, Max thought.

“Wait, what? No!!” Max fearfully exclaimed.

“I have a cleaver in my pocket!” Ira exclaimed grabbing one of the small sticks she had put in her pocket earlier.

“Perfect.” Gail took the knife “OK Max, it will all right, just breathe-I’ve seen them do this on tv!”. She started hacking at the leg, once it was done she wrapped a tissue around his leg.

“OK, now you have to be careful not to stand or run on that leg until it heals. I think it will take about two days before you can take the bandage off.”

Just then the rain stopped and they heard a noise coming from the forest. John decided to poke his head out the tent to see what it was.

“BEAR!!!!” John popped his head back in and started trying to zip up the tent, but the bear got there first. It started roaring and shaking the tent. Then the bear broke open the tent and grabbed Max.

“MAX!” they all screamed, the kids started attacking the bear to try and save Max.

“Let him GO!” Ira yelled swinging a stick at the bear with full force whacking it on the back. “Ow! I mean ROAR!!!!” the bear yelled. All the kids then jump onto the bear, throwing it to the ground. Everyone started whacking him until it let Max go.

The bear, trying to get up, wrestled the kids and was still losing when the park ranger came out. She was holding something in her hand when she ran up to them yelling “Get out of the way! I’ve got a tranquilizer gun! The kids got off the bear and let the park ranger to do her work, but once they got of the bear, it got up and started roaring at the park ranger. Then she stabbed the tranquilizer into the bear and it fell to the ground dramatically, and fell asleep.

“That was so cool!” Gail exclaimed.

“Yeah you’re sooo cool!” the other kids agreed.

“Thanks, I’ll take care of the bear, you kids need to go to sleep like this guy”. She dragged the bear out and then, the wolves were back. The children all ran back into the tent.

“Oh no Max! Your other leg, I think the bear might’ve broken it I can see the bone” John said.

“N-” Max started to protest

“Yeah,  we are going need to amputate that one too!” Gail cut him off.

“YEAH!”  Ira agreed, so they amputated that one too.

They eventually fell asleep, after teasing Max that “He’s not allowed to walk on either of his legs for the next few days of school-starting monday.”

In the morning, they were awoken by the park ranger who was yelling that Gail’s mom was here to pick her up. Soon after she left Max hobbled after.

“See you tomorrow!” John yelled goodbye and then he and Ira started cleaning up. As they did so they found yesterday’s supper which reminded them-they never did finish hunting for all that food.
