It was 8:00 am. Gerardo was at the Palace gates arguing with a guard.
“I want to see the princess,” he said.
“You may not,” growled the guard.
“I just want to give her a gift. Is that illegal?” sighed Gerardo.
“It is if you do not show your loyalty to the king,” said the guard.
“What do I have to do to show my loyalty?” Gerardo asked.
“Meet me at the waterfall in one hour.”
At 9:00 am Gerardo met the guard at the waterfall.
“The princess’s favorite crown fell down the waterfall. Go find it,” the guard said. Two hours later he found it. He was soaking wet and freezing cold, but he found it.
The guard was so surprised he nearly jumped out of his skin.
“OK. Meet me at the clearing in the woods in two hours.”
At 1:00 pm they met in the clearing.
“One of the princess’s ribbons are caught in one of the trees. Go find it.” The guard snickered.
“How am I supposed to find it,” Gerardo groaned, but he set to work. Finally at 4:00 pm, he found it. A bird had used it to build its nest, but the nest was on the ground, so he took the ribbon. When the guard saw it, his eyes nearly popped out of his head. “M-m-meet m-me at the m-market at 7:00pm.”
At 7:00 pm they met at the market. There was a lot of food, but the guard led him straight to the lemons.
“These are the most sour lemons in the world,” the guard said. “You must eat one before the night is over.:
“But-but-but they’re the sourest in the world,” complained Gerardo. Then he thought of an excuse. “I left my courage at home,” he said. “Meet me back here at 10:00 pm. I know it’s late, but it will give me time to find it.”
“OK,” the guard said.
At 10:00 they met back at the market.
“I found my courage. It was under my bed,” Gerardo announced, and he grabbed a lemon and ate it. Almost immediately he regretted it. He ran home and the next day came back to the palace gates and visited the princess.
