Money Mouths

The truck at work finally sold, and I had put some of the money hopefully into savings. I knew we would have to turn around almost immediately and take some out again for long-delayed maintenance projects. Still, until I knew just how much those projects would cost, it could snuggle down in the bank account.

Now, looking at the bills coming due, I began to wonder if any of it would last the next week.

I flopped back in my chair. “I guess when we get an estimate Monday, I’ll figure out how much money to transfer back into checkings.”

“It won’t always be like this,” assured Philip from the table, where he was regrouping between jobs.

I stared at him, refraining from paraphrasing Ecclesiastes 5:11, which I had read just that morning—when riches increase, so do those that eat them. I already have a lineup of expenses I keep putting off, just waiting for us to have enough money for them to pounce.

I went home wondering if we would have to choose between paying for needed maintenance projects and due bills with that money from the, um…truck sale…that God had just provided…and here I was worrying again.

Sigh. Hadn’t it just been a week ago I had stared blankly at the problem of where to get money for looming maintenance? God provided. And if that provision was actually for weekly bills rather than maintenance…well, I guess we’ll see what He’ll do next. In the meantime, it’s time to go sing my song again.
